We Incorporated!
For the past several years, Convergence Magazine has been a fiscally sponsored project of the 501(c)3 nonprofit Commonwealth Foundation for Inclusive Democracy. Commonwealth has been very good to us, keeping fees low and services flexible. At the beginning of 2026, we made a move to a new 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, Truthout.
We’re really excited about working with our colleagues at Truthout: as another Movement Media Alliance founding member who sees many things about the independent media business in similar ways, the pairing made a lot of sense. They’re invested in Convergence as a project and have the infrastructure to help us as we grow.
In order to do this, we also had to incorporate. After some deliberation and consultation with an attorney, we decided to become a standalone 501(c)4. There are a lot of reasons why this helps us on our journey towards greater financial stability, and the most exciting part is we’re our own legal entity for the first time.
What This Means for Readers
Nothing about your reader experience will change! We are still pursuing the same nonprofit mission. Our website will look exactly the same. Our staff remains unchanged.
We just have some new back office partners helping us make sure everything works.
What This Means for Donors
If you have an existing membership, your donation will go through Truthout as our 501(c)3 sponsor. These memberships are tax deductible under the law.
We will be transitioning membership primarily to our 501(c)4: if you are not concerned with itemized deductions, please use our default membership form. To be clear: donations to 501(c)4s are not tax deductible.
If you are an individual donor who still wishes to receive a deduction, you have options.
- Make a donation using our 501(c)3 page.
- Mail a donation by check to Truthout. Ensure that the memo includes that it’s for Convergence, and please include your email address so we can send you a digital receipt!
- Get in touch if you want to make a direct transfer to Truthout and we can get you the information you need to do that.
For foundations and other philanthropic entities, your grants will be going to and signed by Truthout as our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor. Most 2026 grants are already being handled by Truthout.
If you have any questions about this transition, please get in touch.
