Submissions
Convergence Magazine accepts submissions of non-fiction drafts (750-2500 words, ideally under 2000) as well as pitches for stories.
Please note that at present, due to budget constraints and our largely volunteer-driven editorial process, we do not provide baseline compensation for submissions.
We look for pieces that:
- are grounded in organizing—that don’t simply name problems, but talk about getting to solutions and that draw lessons and analysis from actual work.
- are in alignment with our political project: blocking the forces of authoritarianism and building the power and influence of progressive leadership in the broad front against fascism so we can win true multiracial democracy.
- are of use to people active in that broad front.
- cite sources, and include these as hyperlinks to materials rather than footnotes; first-person reporting is also very welcome, and direct quotations, especially when they’re from movement protagonists, are particularly appreciated.
- avoid passive voice and emphasize the agency and protagonism of the subjects of the article.
We generally prefer shorter sentences and shorter paragraphs. The tone must be respectful of and accurate in its characterization of forces within the broad front that we seek to unify—no snark, polemics, straw men, personal attacks, or self-righteousness.
We aren’t interested in debate for the sake of debate, but debate that’s relevant for the moment we are in and for the strategic questions we face is of great interest.
We welcome submissions that highlight the work of groups and alignments we are in relationship with, but articles shouldn’t be “self-promotional” or one-sided, or about airing internal debates.
If you are submitting a full draft of an article, please include a link to a shared document (in Google Drive for example); this helps us with readability, and then you don’t have to copy and paste your entire article into this form!
Our small and persistent team usually takes around 2-3 weeks to reply to article submissions we’re interested in publishing. We make a serious effort to respond to all inquiries, but ask for your understanding in advance that we are powered by volunteers and don’t always have time.
