Episode Description from November 14, 2024: Following last week’s elections, Scot and Sue are joined by Daniel Hunter, co-founder of Choose Democracy, to discuss how we respond to authoritarians emboldened by the election results. In the episode, they take a deeper look together at Daniel’s recent post-election essay 10 Ways to Be Prepared and Grounded Now That Trump Has Won (first published by Waging Nonviolence and then shared by Convergence). What should we be doing to defend our democratic institutions? What can we learn from other countries fighting the rise of authoritarianism in their borders? Daniel also touches on the transformative power of trusting ourselves and making space for grieving in movement work.

Daniel Hunter

In 2004, Daniel co-founded Choose Democracy to train tens of thousands about what to do in case of a Trump coup. He has trained pro-democracy movements in Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, India, and many other places. Daniel has written multiple books: Building a Movement to End the New Jim Crow, Climate Resistance Handbook, and Strategy and Soul — a thrilling personal story about community organizing and direct action. He works as global training director for 350.org

Cayden Mak

Cayden Mak is the publisher at Convergence Magazine and the host of Block & Build: Roadmaps for the Left.

Prior to Convergence, Cayden spent nearly a decade in various roles at 18 Million Rising, including five years as Executive Director and two as Chief Technology Officer, developing the organization inside and out into the digital-first anchor of national progressive Asian American organizing. His other movement work has included organizing for community-designed affordable housing with the Save E. 12th Coalition, co-founding Youngist, a youth media collective, organizing graduate research assistants for a labor union, and helping coordinate tracks and network gatherings at the Allied Media Conference. He serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Kairos Fellowship.

Scot Nakagawa is a co-founder and co-director of the 22nd Century Initiative, a national strategy and action hub in the fight to defeat white nationalism and authoritarianism. Scot is also the founder of The Anti-Authoritarian Playbook, an online newsletter to the frontline of the growing movement to win a truly people-centered, pluralistic, multiracial and feminist democracy in the U.S.

Sue Hyde
Sue Hyde is the Deputy Director of the 22nd Century Initiative and co-host of the Anti-Authoritarian Podcast. From 1994 to 2018, Sue directed the annual Creating Change Conference, a project of the National LGBTQ Task Force. She and the late Urvashi Vaid founded the Creating Change Conference in 1988. Sue believes fervently that a vibrant pro-democracy movement can and will build a feminist and multi-racial democracy in the United States.
