2025 has been one hell of a wild ride. As we wrap up this year, it’s hard to not think about the horrors heaped on our doorsteps: Devastation in Gaza. Neighbors kidnapped by masked agents. The hollowing-out of our already meager social safety net and a dismantling of the systems that help everyday people meet medical and care needs. The march towards war and the commission of war crimes—in the Caribbean and around the world. The consolidation of our media system under a few corporate overlords. I could go on.
We cannot deny the flourishing of an increasingly coordinated and confident movement, and while the work is cut out for us, organizers across the country have spent the past year honing our tools.
But it has also been a year with wins. Communities are forging deeper connections as they band together to combat ICE terror. Mutual aid projects are using moments of crisis to build local power. Massive street protests are mobilizing millions of people—many of whom are brand new to our movements (Hello! Welcome!). Organizers are resisting plans to build mega data centers—and winning. We’ve elected progressive champions in local, state, and even some federal races across the country. We cannot deny the flourishing of an increasingly coordinated and confident movement, and while the work is cut out for us, organizers across the country have spent the past year honing our tools.
We do this work not because the outcome is inevitable, but precisely because the future is contested. It’s up to us to fight for it.
I’m pleased to report that we’ve also had our best year ever at Convergence. More readers and listeners are finding and returning to Convergence as a trusted place for principled debates and rigorous analyses of what’s happening and why. We added a full-time managing editor to our team, and tried some new formats on for size. We’re entering 2026 ready for the road ahead.
One of my favorite things about this work is that it brings me into constant contact with movement leaders like you. I want you to know that we see you and all the powerful work that you’ve been doing to keep the flame alive. We do this work not because the outcome is inevitable, but precisely because the future is contested. It’s up to us to fight for it.

As we enter the darkest time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, I always remind myself that the light always returns. Politically, the return of the light is not a celestial inevitability, but the result of the faithful labor of many people in many places, acting in the ways that make the highest use of our skills and abilities. There’s work to do, for all of us, in 2026. I’m honored that we’re on this journey together.
